Finding Your Faith in Addiction Recovery
Whether you have a relationship with Christ or have doubts about his existence, he longs to reclaim your life and set you free. Faith-based treatment is a powerful tool in addiction recovery, even if you don’t believe or put your trust in God. Finding a rehab that allows you to explore your own personal faith while overcoming your addiction is the key to finding a comfortable, but also successful rehab experience. While it’s not required to have faith in addiction recovery, it can be helpful for your mind, body and spirit to have the opportunity to explore.
The Power of Silence
People of faith and nonbelievers alike are reluctant to tell someone that they have a problem. The longer they suffer in silence, though, the more power addiction has over them.
What’s holding you back?
- Misunderstandings about the nature of addiction
Addiction is a chronic brain disease that is almost always inherited. It’s often accompanied by at least one other mental issue. Addiction is sometimes triggered by traumatic events such as sexual assault, the death of a loved one or an extended period of unemployment.
It’s almost impossible to get clean without professional help. Failing to kick the habit on your own isn’t a sign of sinfulness or lack of willpower. It’s the nature of the beast. You’re only accountable to respond to it and get help.
- Fear of judgment
There are always people that we encounter that will judge us or our actions. Bad choices may have paved the way for addiction, but God is famously forward-thinking. Don’t let judgement from others hold you back from having freedom in recovery.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. Look! I am doing a new thing. Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” — Isaiah 43:18-19
Christ looks past your present condition and sees the restored, vibrant, productive new you. He will work in ways that you never expected.
- Remorse for the pain you’ve cause friends and loved ones
You can also trust Jesus with broken relationships. You may be disappointed if forgiveness is hard to come by, but God will never stop trying to turn the hearts of the people in your life.
- Feeling that you don’t deserve forgiveness
You don’t. None of us do. That’s the incomprehensible, amazing thing about grace. It’s a gift from God for the taking.

Spirituality in Addiction Recovery
” … Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick … For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” — Matthew 9:12-13
Jesus made these remarks to explain why he had befriended a bunch of thieving tax collectors. The passage is neatly sandwiched between several stories about physical healing. Clearly, Jesus wants us well both physically and spiritually. He was also advocating professional help. Yes, he works miracles, but he often works them through the knowledge and skill of physicians, psychologists and substance abuse specialists.
Combining spirituality with proven scientific methods is highly effective in an addiction recovery program. Here at St. Gregory Recovery Center, staff members are not only trained and experienced in addiction. They are also compassionate, prayerful and committed to your well-being.
If you require detox, you’ll be showered with emotional support. In therapy, you’ll be treated as a unique individual whose problems are like no one else’s. Your setbacks will be handled with thoughtfulness. Your progress will be carefully monitored. Your successes will be celebrated. We’ll help you build a strong network of support for long-term recovery, and we’ll always be there when you fear a relapse.
Faith-based treatment goes several steps beyond traditional rehab. We know that it’s hard to imagine anything good coming from addiction, but this is a prime opportunity to let a loving God show you what he’s made of. He is the answer for all the emotional turmoil that accompanies addiction:
- Fear
“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4
- Despair
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
- Sadness
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” — Psalm 56:8
- Loneliness
” … for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6
- Vulnerability
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” — Psalm 18:2
- Weakness
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness … ” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
