Support Animals
Addiction Treatment Doesn't Have to Mean Leaving Your Support Animal Behind
Making the decision to seek treatment for a substance use disorder is one of the most important steps a person can take. Yet for many people, one concern can delay that decision: “What will happen to my pet?”
For individuals who rely on a certified support animal or emotional support animal, the thought of being separated from a trusted companion can create overwhelming anxiety. These animals often provide comfort during periods of stress, help reduce symptoms of anxiety or depression, and offer consistent companionship throughout recovery.
At St. Gregory Recovery Center in Bayard, Iowa, we believe that no one should have to choose between getting the help they need and ensuring their support animal is cared for. That’s why we offer unique options that allow many clients to remain with their certified support animals during treatment. When that isn’t possible, we partner with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to ensure pets receive loving temporary care until their owners are ready to return home.
Why Support Animals Matter During Recovery
Recovery is about much more than stopping the use of drugs or alcohol. It also involves healing emotionally, mentally, and physically. Throughout that process, support animals can provide a calming and reassuring presence.
Certified support animals, including emotional support animals, can help people manage feelings of loneliness, fear, anxiety, and depression. Their companionship often provides routine, comfort, and unconditional acceptance—qualities that can be especially meaningful during the early stages of recovery.
For many individuals, caring for a pet also reinforces healthy daily habits. Walking a dog, feeding a pet, or maintaining a consistent schedule encourages responsibility and structure, both of which are important components of long-term recovery.
While support animals are not a replacement for therapy or clinical treatment, they can complement evidence-based care by helping clients feel more emotionally grounded throughout the recovery process.
Bringing Your Certified Support Animal to Treatment
St. Gregory Recovery Center welcomes many certified support animals, including dogs and cats, to accompany clients during treatment.
To participate, the animal must have appropriate documentation verifying its status as a certified support animal or emotional support animal. Before admission, our team works with each client to review the necessary documentation and discuss whether the animal is appropriate for the treatment environment.
Every situation is unique, and factors such as the animal’s behavior, health, and ability to safely remain in a residential setting are considered. Our admissions staff is happy to answer questions and help clients understand the requirements before arriving for treatment.
For many people, simply knowing their trusted companion can remain close by removes one more barrier to entering treatment.
When Your Support Animal Can’t Attend Treatment
There are situations where a support animal may not be able to stay at the treatment center. An animal may have medical needs that require specialized care, may not be well-suited to a residential environment, or another circumstance may prevent it from accompanying its owner. Rather than forcing clients to choose between their recovery and their pet’s well-being, St. Gregory Recovery Center partners with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to provide a compassionate alternative. Through this partnership, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa can temporarily foster eligible cats and dogs while their owners participate in treatment. Foster families provide safe, loving homes where pets receive daily care, attention, exercise, and affection. Once treatment is complete, clients are reunited with their beloved companions.
Removing Barriers to Treatment
Many people postpone addiction treatment because they worry about responsibilities waiting at home. Childcare, employment, financial concerns, and pet care are common reasons individuals delay seeking help.
For pet owners, these concerns are understandable. Pets are family, and leaving them without a trusted caregiver simply isn’t an option for many people.
By offering accommodations for certified support animals and providing foster care options through the Animal Rescue League of Iowa when needed, St. Gregory Recovery Center removes one more obstacle that might otherwise prevent someone from seeking life-changing treatment.
Recovery works best when individuals can fully participate in therapy without constant worry about what’s happening at home.
Comprehensive Care for Lasting Recovery
Support animals can provide comfort throughout recovery, but lasting healing also requires professional treatment.
At St. Gregory Recovery Center, clients receive individualized care designed to address the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of addiction. Treatment plans may include medical support, individual counseling, group therapy, relapse prevention education, family involvement, and aftercare planning.
Our compassionate team understands that recovery looks different for everyone. By combining evidence-based therapies with personalized support—including accommodations for eligible support animals—we strive to create an environment where clients feel safe, respected, and empowered to heal.
