Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) seems to exist everywhere, even if you don’t really get it. In fact, research suggests that while most people have at least heard of AI, their understanding of it varies widely by age, education level, and technical experience. But you don’t need to be an AI expert to understand how this evolving tool might fit into your substance-free world. 

You just need a clearer sense of it. 

 

What Is AI and What Can it Do in Recovery?

According to NASA, AI refers to computer systems capable of carrying out tasks that typically require human-like thinking or creativity, like recognizing patterns, understanding language, or creating media. You’ve probably seen AI in things like chatbots, recommendation algorithms, or headlines about job automation. But AI also serves a purpose in healthcare, including psychological and substance use disorder (SUD) services in Bayard and Des Moines.

Here are some ways medical experts and psychiatrists are currently using and exploring AI: 

  • Early SUD risk identification. AI models can analyze patterns in medical records to flag individuals at higher risk of developing SUD. Some systems even look at lifestyle factors over time to identify warning signs earlier than traditional methods.
  • Treatment outcome predictions. Some studies suggest that machine learning models—those that analyze gargantuan datasets and make predictions based on them—can estimate how someone might respond to treatment. In one example, researchers found that AI predictions for alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment outcomes performed similarly to those of clinicians.
  • Monitoring behavioral patterns. AI tools can analyze social media language or digital activity to detect potential substance use. These systems have shown moderate accuracy in identifying patterns, though further research is needed to confirm their reliability.
  • Supporting mental health care delivery. AI currently shows up in telehealth, virtual therapy tools, and screening systems. Some programs can assist with symptom tracking or provide structured support between sessions.
  • Expanding access to care. In areas with limited providers, AI-based tools may help bridge gaps. They can automate reminders, track progress, or offer basic support when human services remain limited.

In recovery spaces, AI can’t replace human care, but it may assist with certain processes or fill in gaps. 

 

How AI Can Support Your Recovery

Here are examples of how AI pops up today, along with what researchers have tested versus what needs more work:

  • AI screening in hospitals (tested). Some hospitals now use AI tools to scan digital health records and identify patients who could be more vulnerable to opioid use disorder (OUD). One study found that this approach worked about as well as standard care and even reduced hospital readmissions, suggesting it could be more widespread one day.
  • Personalized treatment planning (testing). AI systems can process vast amounts of personal data, including behavioral patterns, to suggest tailored treatment approaches. This idea shows promise, but it still needs more real-world validation across diverse populations.
  • Relapse prediction and prevention (testing). Some AI models can analyze behavior and language patterns to estimate relapse risk. These systems may identify triggers or vulnerable periods and alert individuals or providers, though research remains limited in size and consistency.
  • Real-time support tools (testing). Chatbots and virtual assistants could offer immediate responses when you feel overwhelmed or need guidance. These tools aim to provide coping strategies or encouragement, especially when human support isn’t immediately available. But they still have clear limitations. Studies show that while clinicians often rated AI-generated responses as helpful, these systems sometimes produced incorrect or even risky advice. In some cases, AI completely failed to discourage unsafe actions, like attempting to detox at home. They also gave inconsistent answers to similar questions. 
  • Trigger awareness through location or behavior tracking (testing). Certain apps could one day notify users when they approach locations tied to past use or risky environments. But even though this type of AI could help you pause and make a different choice, it would rely on you opting into sharing real-time personal data.
  • Closing treatment gaps (testing). With a shortage of trained providers, AI may help extend services to more people. It could assist with administrative tasks, reminders, and ongoing monitoring, allowing clinicians to focus more on direct care.

For now, we need to approach AI carefully. It can support your recovery, but it shouldn’t guide major decisions on its own. Human care, clinical expertise, and real connection still matter deeply.
